Info

From the jury
“We’ve often seen film and theatre combined, but in DE SITCOM it’s done with such creativity and thoughtfulness that it becomes pure philosophy – without ever feeling like you’re watching a heavy-handed manifesto.”

It’s been eight years since the legendary sitcom DE SITCOM, created and performed by a theatre collective on the verge of financial collapse. There was no budget, just a real group of friends in a real coffee bar. A TV series that was so unusually authentic and radical, so hilarious and unsettling, so deeply human and tragic that it immediately became a cult hit. Yet, to the growing fanbase’s astonishment, the series ended with an astounding, unresolved cliffhanger. Life had mercilessly overtaken fiction.

Eight years later, sitcoms have become retro, a genre from a time when laughing still came more naturally than crying. Nostalgia has become a business model, and so producers reunite the group. How have they fared? Can they still move forward together? DE SITCOM is a schizophrenic tragicomedy wherein actors with tragic lives must perform their own stories—but as comedy. At the same time, you witness the making of the sitcom itself, including the loves, the breakups, the mistrust, the cautious attempts at reconnection, the betrayals, and the persistent hope that somehow, everything will turn out alright. The hope for a happy ending.

Reviews

"THE HOW shows itself once again to be masterfully witty in its self-irony. You just have to do it: dress up a philosophical treatise on flatness and humour as a perfectly accessible comedy, a contemporary Anton Chekhov. Opening Night, DE HOE's first big show, was already to lick your fingers at, but this follow-up surpasses that: as subtle as it is showy, as witty as it is sad."

—Wouter Hillaert, De Standaard

"In an organised chaos, the inspired cast shuttles with great humour and self-mockery between TV and theatre, superficiality and profundity, comedy and tragedy, reality and fiction, young and old. (...) Casual-looking but very thoughtful scenes expose a society that loses itself in trivialities. It results in an enriching 'cut' performance that makes you smile tastefully, but also doesn't stop talking about it."

—Guy Van Vliet, Nieuwsblad
